The literal meaning of ‘healing’ is ‘to make whole’. In holistic healing the focus is not just upon the physical but all aspects of a person’s needs from their psychological, physical, emotional & spiritual needs, to their environment and lifestyles. There are many healing methods and disciplines that assist the healing process, including massage, reflexology, yoga, movement, meditation, energy & crystal healing plus many, many more. There is an ever evolving world of healing available to explore, including any form of self-inquiry, reading personal development books and researching spiritual teachings, journaling, walking in nature, practising mindfulness or receiving coaching or guidance from someone further along the path.
Healing has always been entwined in our lives as traditions and knowledge have been passed down from ancient times. Medicine men or shamans from all over the world were and still are concerned with treating the whole, and had had their own treatments and herbal or plant medicines. The Ancient Egyptians, the Native Americans and the Aboriginals for instance were all masters of meditation and different forms of reiki, and listened for the whispers of spirit to guide them. In the Eastern world it is not even known as alternative medicine, it is simply the way that it is. Ayurvedic medicine is said to go back 5000 years, based on the belief that health and wellness depend on a delicate balance between the mind, body, and spirit, including thoughts and feelings. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been around for at least 2000 years, enhancing recuperative power and immunity through herbs, acupuncture, diet, massage, and exercises such as qigong and tai chi. The New Age movement saw the western world looking toward these practises with increased interest to bring balance and wellness into our lives. This has only increased as the health benefits have been seen to improve quality of life.
Why do we need healing?
Imbalances can be caused from many situations occurring in our lives, such as emotional or physical trauma, injury, stress, negative thoughts and feelings including fear, worry, doubt, anxiety, negative self-talk, toxicity, destructive lifestyles and relationships, neglect of self, emotions that are not expressed, low energy levels, lack of purpose & motivation. When you really look at yourself and what is happening on the world stage, there is often a lot to be healed to restore wholeness, balance, and create happiness.
